Fire Prevention:
Barbecuing Advice
• Only use barbecues outside. They produce toxic gases that can be lethal in enclosed spaces.
• Keep barbecues away from your home and combustibles such as patio umbrellas and awnings, bushes, piles of leaves, pine trees…
• Never leave a fire or hot charcoal unattended.
• Use only a proper charcoal lighter liquid or solid. Every year people are burnt severely while using petrol to start charcoal fires.
• If you use an LP gas barbecue, check all fuel-line connections for leaks with a solution of soap and water and watch for bubbles that indicate leaking gas.
• Turn off burner and gas cylinder valves when th
e barbecue is not in use.
• Never store an LP gas cylinder indoors (i.e. not the garage or cellar).
• When you are finished cooking, wait until the coals are cool before leaving the barbecue. If you are in a hurry, douse the coals with water, keeping your body clear of steam and smoke.
