Energy and Environmental Problems Form The Main Challenge For Our Future

From 23 to 26 October, 'Alternative Energy Days" will be organised in Mons. The purpose of this event is to find answers to the changing domestic and international energy market, identify new areas of development and to explore new markets (see website www.energymons.be). This exhibition will be held in Mons Expo and in the cinema complex, Imagix, and various educational and play activities will be organised in Mons and surrounding areas.
SHAPE/NATO can get involved in this important event by supporting and participating in some of the public activities. This could be a very good opportunity to involve the SHAPE community and the local population, and would certainly contribute to the new image SHAPE intends to promote.
Spinning Challenge: From 23 to 26 October hundreds of people, sportsmen and women, will participate in a mega spinning session on RP bicycles. Competitors will run in sessions to rhythmic music to produce green electricity. It will be the first time such an event has been organised, and the goal is obviously to collect green energy produced by pedalling and then to offer it to a charitable association.
The spinning will be held on the Grand Place of Mons under a 300 m2 transparent tent. A hundred fixed bicycles will be placed on a 200m2 stage, and 2 restrooms, including 15 heated cabins, will be placed inside the tent for the competitors. A large windmill will be installed on the Grand Place as a symbol of the energy produced and it will be possible to visualise this energy on a large counter. Nations or services at SHAPE could form 'spinning teams'. This could be a great event, as important as the Belgian heritage days organised at SHAPE last September.
