57th NMR Birthday Party
Now considered a SHAPE tradition not to be missed, the National Military Representative (NMR) Echelon Birthday Party occurs on the last Thursday in January every year. On this festive occasion, the NMRs and Chief of the French Military Mission (CFMM), along with staff and spouses, gather to celebrate the establishment of the Echelon in 1951. This special event also commemorates the NMR Echelon’s significant contribution to improving Alliance relationships. This is especially significant during this period of high operational tempo for NATO.
This year’s celebration was held at the SHAPE Club on Thursday, 31 January. Nations transformed the main ballroom into an extraordinary multi-national fest enjoyed by all. The variety of food and beverages was truly magnificent and everyone enjoyed sampling the various specialities provided by 26 nations. All the NATO flags were on display, along with photos, banners, and decorations, which created a friendly, colourful atmosphere. The 500 or so guests enjoyed their journey “around the world”, tasting the traditional treats and sharing the evening with fellow Shapians.
The Dean of the NMR Echelon, US Air Force Colonel Jeff Shivnen, opened the evening by welcoming all and introduced General Sir John McColl, the Deputy SACEUR. General McColl addressed the group and stressed the wonderful spirit of cooperation between the NMRs/CFMM, the significant accomplishments in the past year, and the high value of the Echelon with regard to their co-operation with the SHAPE staff. Following his remarks, General McColl joined a distinguished Romanian NCO dressed in traditional military ensemble to cut the birthday cake and open the festivities.
All the guests thoroughly enjoyed their evening, and will long remember the wonderful food, drinks, and camaraderie. The nations are looking forward to the 58th birthday party in January 2009!
