SHAPE LANGUAGE CENTRE / Essay Selection of the Month
Here in the Language Centre we encourage our students to write about things they love.
The passage below, written by Iolanda Ciarciaglini (a pre-intermediate English student), takes you on a literary journey through Italy as seen through the eyes of someone who truly loves her country:
‘A SHORT JOURNEY
When an Italian person speaks about his country, he usually tells about pizza, museums, famous cities. But I am a different citizen and so I’ll tell you about a different Italy.
Have you ever been to Sicily? That island was the heart of the Mediterranean sea for many centuries. If you visit it, you can admire historical monuments of Byzantine and Roman or Norman cultures. If you enter a restaurant you can try arabian dishes, like cous-cous. If you visit a little island like Pantelleria, you can sleep in a typical arabian home, dammuso, made from black volcanic stones. And what about Sardinia, its Costa Smeralda is the most famous beach all over the world and here you can eat delicious bread and cheese and drink liqueurs! And about Puglia? Have you ever seen its Trulli? They are very interesting old shaped cone houses made of stones too, and please, try our tomatoes and olive oil with Altamura’s bread - unforgettable!
My dear tourist, when you decide to see Italy, you should prepare to fall in love, because the food, the climate, the people, the monuments the countryside, each and everything in my country is the best you’ll see in your life.’
