Each New Year brings us an opportunity to assess how things have been going and what we want to do in the coming year to improve things. So now that it is February, it is time to see how you are doing with your New Year Resolutions! If you’ve already started to falter on meeting your goals in 2008, perhaps the SHAPE Community can help you get back on track. If you’re still on track, good for you! But let us help you stay there.

If you wanted to improve your health, take a look at the programmes offered through the SHAPE Health Clinic and the many fitness opportunities provide by our athletics staff and outdoor recreation specialists. Participate in SACEUR’s Sport Programme, get outside on one of the hiking, horseback riding or cave adventures, or get ready for our first-ever SHAPE Half-Marathon on 12 April! Our fitness staff has conditioning programmes designed to get you ready and keep you off your couch.

If 2008 is the year you resolved to see more of the world, then check out the continuously expanding trips and tours programme. We are working to bring you new trips to different locales as well as the traditional favourites long enjoyed by the international community. If you have a suggestion let us know! Want to know about a place? Ask one of your friends and colleagues from the international community, with more than 40 nations represented here there is usually a subject matter expert available!

If you wanted to focus on self-improvement, then consider everything offered by the Language Centre, Arts and Crafts, the community library, and the dozens of SHAPE groups that meet to further their abilities in their area of special interest – from Toastmasters helping you with public speaking to the Garden Club assuring your thumb turns green, there is something out there for you!

If you are determined to spend more quality time with your family, consider the many activities and opportunities offered through the International Chapel, Child and Youth Services, the Performing Arts Centre, the SHAPE Club, and others.

Whatever your goals, there is always something happening to help you get there! Take a look at the Community Calendar each month so you don’t miss out.

While 2007 saw many quality of life improvements in the community, we’re not done yet. The Rationed Items Store, Pizza Bowl, Blue Moon Pub, Performing Arts Centre and other projects were just the start. We expect to push hard in 2008 to bring about even more facility improvements as well as expanded quality of life programme offerings. As always, your input is critical, so take advantage of the opportunities to let us know what you think, whenever you can.

I’m excited about the opportunities that await us in 2008. As we approach NATO’s 60th year anniversary in 2009, I know we’ll have one of the best year’s ever at SHAPE. With your help, and the tremendous teamwork of the international community, 2008 – The Year of the Non-Commissioned Officer – is bound to be a great one!
